Find out if you are affected by the 3G phase out and, if so, how to stay connected

Mobile carriers are shutting down their 3G networks as they transition to more advanced network services such as 5G. According to the FCC, 3G mobile phones and certain older 4G mobile phones will be unable to make or receive calls and texts, including calls to 911, or use data services. In addition, other connected devices such as medical-alert devices, tablets, smart watches, vehicle SOS services and home security systems may be affected.

Companies began phasing out 3G services on January 1, though plans and timing vary by company. (See the accompanying graphic) If your mobile carrier is not listed, you may still be affected. Many carriers, such as Cricket, Boost, Straight Talk and several Lifeline mobile service providers, utilize the networks of AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile. The FCC recommends contacting your mobile provider or consult your provider’s website for information about their 3G retirement plan and whether your phone or other device may be affected. Some devices may only require a software update. If you need to upgrade your device, many carriers are offering discounted or free upgrades.
