Every year, residents of the personal care residence participate in a caterpillar-to-butterfly project. Residents are amazed at the overall transformation from a small caterpillar to a beautiful, orange and black monarch butterfly. A big thank you to Tana Martin, resident volunteer at The Village at Utz Terrace, for assisting with this project. "This has been a wonderful experience and joy to share with the residents, team members and visitors," said Kris Martin, personal care Life Enrichment leader.
On September 6, residents Larry and Doris Blocher celebrated their 65th wedding annviersary. The Blochers joined family and friends in the Terrace Overlook Restaurant for a special anniversary luncheon, complete with cake, presents and delightful company. The couple met at a local family restaurant in Hanover and were married September 6, 1958, in Snydersburg, Maryland. The Blochers say that raising their children is one of the greatest accomplishments they have shared over the past 65 years. Most of their fondest memories were spent traveling across the United States and Europe, having visited all 50 U.S. states. "We did everything together," says Larry. Happy 65th wedding anniversary to Larry and Doris Blocher!
Residents enjoyed a Pride of the Susquehanna Riverboat Cruise in Harrisburg! Built in 1988, the Pride of the Susquehanna is one of the six remaining riverboats in the United States with an authentic paddlewheel. Residents admired the scenic views while learning about the unique history and ecology of the Susquehanna River and Harrisburg!
A group of residential living residents traveled to Halethorpe, MD, for an informational Guinness tour at the Guinness Open Gate Brewery! Throughout the day, residents learned the history of Guinness, its heritage and the overall brewing process.
Residents of the personal care residence held their annual beach party! This was the first year the party was held in the courtyard. It was a fantastic day filled with good weather, beach tunes, ice cream and the company of each other. A special thank you to singer and entertainer, Dan Martin, for the lively music.

Residential living residents had a blast stepping into other times and places during a photo shoot at the MU Costume Shop! Residents selected their choice from more than 30,000 costumes in the shop’s collection. The shop was established in 1982 after the acquisition of 10,000 theatrical costumes via a gift to the Millersville University from veteran costumer Jean Loeb of Lancaster. The collection has grown over the years thanks to additional acquisitions, construction and donations.

Resident volunteers were honored during the April Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon. Volunteers enjoyed a delicious meal and great conversation with their fellow volunteers. A big thank you to Terry Stickles, Volunteer Services coordinator, for orchestrating this event. Also, thank you, volunteers for faithfully and unselfishly sharing your time, talents and gifts to benefit residents at The Village at Utz Terrace!
A special delivery from the Easter bunny! Residents of the personal care residence were greeted by the Easter bunny during a game of Bingo! Alyssa Groft, personal care home administrator, dressed up as the Easter bunny and greeted many residents throughout the game!
Residential living residents travelded to the 16th annual PEEP show in Westminster, MD! Hundreds of creative sculptures lined the walls, and they were all made out of marshmallow Peeps!
Residential living residents demonstrated their diverse talents at the Village Talent Show! Some residents united in song and dance, while others delivered various jokes or readings. Acts like The Unsynchronized Singers, The FABS (Feet, Arms, Brains and Smiles), The Line Dancers of Utz Terrace and many more filled the room with laughter and applause! The gentlemen who collect trash around the community even performed the Garbage CanCan! Each act featured incredible talent and creativity!
Residential living residents from The Villages at Utz Terrace and Shrewsbury had a blast at the sock hop! From the old-fashioned decorations and records, to the coke floats, the Terrace Overlook Restaurant was completely transformed for this 1950s event. After a delicious dinner of burgers, hot dogs, fries, onion rings and sodas, residents hit the dance floor dressed in their best 1950s outfits! Residents entered a drawing for "best dressed" and many prizes were awarded to sock hop attendees.
Residents of the personal care residence celebrated Mardi Gras! The residents enjoyed sharing their personal stories of when they traveled to New Orleans for Mardi Gras. The event also included an informative, educational session on the history of Mardi Gras. A Mardi Gras celebration is not complete without festive jazz music and cake for everyone!
Resident Richard Schrader spoke to WGAL about his wood carving experiences! Richard Schrader, a resident of the skilled care center, spoke with WGAL News 8 about his experiences as a woodcarver. From intricately carved birds, to a 15-animal carousel that took three years to complete, Richard has carved many animals and has found great joy in his craft. How did Richard become a woodcarver? In 1975, he purchased a duck decoy kit and has continued woodcarving for nearly 50 years. Richard is also a detailed and skilled painter, and paints every carved masterpiece. Over the years, he hoped his wife would take over the painting portion of his craft, but she always reminded him that since he was the carver, he should be the painter, too! Richard’s collection of carved animals demonstrates his incredible talent as both a woodcarver and painter. On February 18 Richard’s collection was auctioned off at Porters Fire Company in Spring Grove, Pa.
A group of residents from the personal care residence visited The Old Farm House Team Room in Thomasville, PA! The ladies enjoyed a high tea luncheon featuring fresh fruit, tea sandwiches, scones, desserts and more! It was a relaxing and enjoyable time of fellowship, food and feeling fancy in the exquisite tea room. Many antiques filled the room, embodying a vintage and historical feel.

The relaxing and educational outing featured a lakeside picnic and conversation about the beauty surrounding them. Special thanks to Renae Weidner and Angela McCarty, state park educators, who provided residents a lens into the wildlife at the park, including the eagles in the area, the water levels and how the park and lake came to be.

With the help of steel drum music from Jammin’ Joe Clark, residents of the personal care residence were transported to the Caribbean Islands! The Caribbean Island Party included an interactive rhythmic drum circle experience in which residents jammed on the drums and various other musical instruments. Fruity drinks and fresh fruit helped top off their island experience!
